JOAKIM BERGHÄLL: SOLO COLTRANE
Joakim Berghäll, woodwinds

On September 23rd, 2026 I'll be releasing my first actual solo album. It's called "SOLO Coltrane" and the name holds a double meaning. Besides the obvious, aka the material being composed by John (and Alice) Coltrane, SOLO also refers to me performing the music alone, with (mostly) one horn at the time.

This is exciting in pretty much every sense of the word. First of all, I'm thrilled to release a record filled mostly with music composed by someone who's work especially as a musician has been my greatest driving force for at least 30 years. Recording the music, I've also fallen more and more in love with the compositions. I've never covered anyone's music before, which makes this exciting in one more way. Not too many people have covered Coltrane as a solo performance, let alone the fact that I'm mostly playing the baritone saxophone. And I'm very happy with the outcome, which makes it super exciting to represent the record to people.
A 12" LP of eight tracks will be in shops by September 23rd, and digitally you will find this nearly everywhere (not Spotify).

Before the record release, I'll be putting out a couple of videos. First, a dance video with "The Sun" by Alice Coltrane as the music track.
(Don't worry, I won't be dancing!)
Then, you'll be seeing & hearing a live performance of one of the songs. This comes out pretty naturally, since the recording also consists merely of live recorded tracks and whole takes. There's a couple of surprises that brake this rule, but for the most part, it's just a one horn acoustic performance. This also means that it can be performed live pretty much everywhere. Clubs, concert halls, museums, churches, under a tree, you name it.

Berghäll Triality: The Antarctic
A perfectly sensible sequel to our highly acclaimed debut album, The Arctic.

No physical release, since it's in Dolby Atmos format (and that's actually pretty cool)!
There still ain't many Atmos jazz albums from Finland yet.
(Personally, I hadn't heard of one on the day of the release in May 2022.)

On "The Antarctic", Berghäll Triality is:
Joakim Berghäll, baritone saxophone, producing
Kalle Kalima, electric guitar
